I don't know why I read these posts. Nobody ever supports their ignorant beliefs and opinions with facts. they just spout off thinking that if they yell and complain loud enough it will turn into fact and people will believe it.

The concept of plant "waste" is deceptive. There is no such thing. Cattle eat corn stalks; and if they didn't, they'd have to eat something else. It's part of the human food chain. More fundamentally, anything that isn't used otherwise, decomposes in the ground and becomes fertilizer for subsequent crops. If you take away the natural fertilizer, you'll need to add more chemical fertilizer. And guess what chemical fertilizers are made from? Crude oil and natural gas!

Plant sugars includes switch grass, the STALKS from corn, and only cattle enjoy eating corn stalks... the taking away from food supplies and driving food prices arguement is so BOGUS it is scarey...
How about we tell Congress to STOP all the money given to farmers to NOT grow crops? That would get loads of acres back in production, save us little taxpayers a bundle, slow inflation *AND* supply plant sugars to the biofuel industry WITHOUT impacting food prices

I'm willing to wait and see what happens with this. I am a little concerned about cost, but like any new item, the cost will be high at first, but will eventually drop to a (hopefully) reasonable level. Who knows, the researchers might even hit on something 10 times better in the process.

I'll bet that everyone that made a negative comment on this article drives a big SUV and couldn't care less about the cost of gas and the environment. Why not give it a shot? Oil is a nonrenewable resource and it will run out one day. That day may be in 10 years, 100 years or 1000 years but that day will come and when it does we as a race will need something to replace it with. Why not try to develop new kinds of energy? Even if this particular product is not the answer then maybe something that comes out of the research on this will be. Just remember that many inventions were not the original target of the research but byproducts of it.
I usually just read the other comments with amusement that people who live in this country could be so ignorant but this time I had to voice my own opinion to try to offset some of the ignorance.

This might be something that would work. If oil companies own enough of it and it supplements rather than replaces their product, it uses the current infrastructure and automakers don't have to retool, it could stand a better chance than many of the other alternatives. Didn't see anything on emissions, so it may not get support from environmentalists.

It probably takes more energy than it's worth. However, I've also seen on TV the possiblity of making diesel fuel substitues from a sludge from algae grown in ponds. This could be done with lower energy (sunlight) on a larger scale..

mrpc90 you are very misinformed. ANWR IS NOT THE ANSWER!!! Even if we are suicidal and destroy more of Earths ecology drilling in ANWR, it would take years to get significant amounts of oil coming this way. And even if ANWR contained 50 billion barrels (not likely), only 40 to 50 percent of that oil could be recovered. So 25 billion barrels of oil divided by the US using 25 million barrels of oil a day works out to 1000 days. 3 years of oil. Practically it would take 40+ years to pull the oil out, so I'll give you the 40 years. But, this energy crisis we are in right now will reach critical in a much shorter period. We have to get off of fossil fuels within a few years.

It basically boils down to this - the only alternatives to conventional fuel Big Oil will support are those they control and profit from. Even though Uncle Sam pays them $0.51 for every gallon of ethanol the blend, they resist. Have you heard about the process that was invented to turn slaugherhouse waste into fuel oil? I bet not. It was invented in the U.S., but only European interests chose to pursue it's use.

All we really need to do is to drill in ANWR and build a couple new refineries. Then we'd buy ourselves about 40 more years to work on other types of fuels.
