Most people waiting up to 10 years to buy a new car

USA Today -- People aren't going to buy cars every two or three years anymore, an automotive website says based on an unscientific poll it conducted online.

Now, 78% of the more than 4,000 people polled by AutoMD.com says they will keep their cars at least 10 years.

"What is most compelling is that longer ownership has become an embedded habit for car owners, regardless of what the economy does," said Brian Hafer, a vice president at AutoMD.com. "This significant lengthening of the ownership cycle looks like it is here to stay."

Well, cars are better than yesterday. They don't rust out anymore, and with proper care and more global warming we have no doubt they can survive at least a decade. But when the economy improves, we're not convinced the siren call of the local car dealer won't be more ...

Buying a new car every 2 or 3 years is an extravagance to most of us, unless we use a car for business purposes and need a new or close-to-new car for appearance sake (say, for sales). But buying a new car, as opposed to a good used car, is also usually not necessary. Car leasing has resulted in a large supply of late model used cars on the market, many still under warranty. And you avoid either the instant depreciation of driving a new car off the lot, or the complexity and lack of ownership of leasing. GTH

We have been following this personal policy for the last twenty years. At the cost of todays vehicles, it just makes sense to drive then until the "wheels fall off" as long as the vehicle meets your needs.

The length of time I keep them usually depends on how long they are fun to drive. Cars that go to the shop a lot are by definition never fun to drive. A Ford Escape will stay fun to drive a long time for me, in fact I replaced a totaled Ford Escape Hybrid Limited with a Ford Escape XLT. All I miss is the gas mileage of the hybrid and the rear backup camera.

That way it still has some value at trade-in and the only maintenance I need are 8 to 10 oil changes and everything else is covered by the warranty. Cheers!

My car is almost 7 years old and it has under 100,000k on it........should be good for at least another 7 years!

I have a 1982 F150, a 2004 Marauder, and have only sold/traded one car in my life that had less than 100,000 miles. They are building 'em better - and - they are more expensive. If you maintain one properly, it will last. The F150 has 225,000 miles so far.

I want to trust my car when I am alone and far away from home. Also, many warranties last until the 4 to 5 year mark. So most anything that goes wrong other than normal wear and tear will be covered and nothing will come out of your pocket.
