Mileage Rules May Cut Gasoline Tax Income by $57 Billion

Bloomberg -- A proposed rule requiring automakers to double average fuel economy by 2025 may reduce gasoline-tax collections for U.S. highway and transit systems by $57 billion over 11 years, the Congressional Budget Office said.

President Barack Obama’s administration proposed in November that the average fuel economy of U.S. fleets rise to 54.5 miles per gallon. That would reduce the amount of money available for the Highway Trust Fund by 13 percent from 2012 to 2022, the CBO said in a report released today.

“Policies that are designed to reduce gasoline consumption, including those that would impose stricter standards for the fuel economy of vehicles, could decrease revenues for the trust fund and thus could add to the shortfall,” the report said.

Makes to much sense doesn't it? Our government and the environmental nutcases demand an increase in the fuel economy in vehicles, Fthat forces the big three in Detroit design and build sardine cans on wheels for everybody to drive, the government then hikes the fuel tax rates and gas prices go higher and higher at the pump but not our job wages to pay for it. Yup!!!!! We are about to receive more of the shaft.

More unintended consequences, courtesy of the greenies...and no, I don't want government putting a black box in my car, either.

From the article: "The fund, which pays for road, bridge and transit projects across the U.S., has been bailed out three times by Congress since 2008. The U.S. gasoline tax has stayed constant since 1993 with Obama and congressional leaders saying they are unwilling to raise it in a surface transportation bill lawmakers have debated this year."
====================================================================

Most of the problems which we face as a nation can be attributed to government, in general, and the FEDERAL government, in particular. If we went back to the 2001 Budget, we would save enough money to completely eliminate the Income Tax. Imagine what it would be like to keep all of the money that you earn?

The problem with this is that we would experience a much needed tax revolt. Instead of taxes being withheld by your employer, each person should be responsible for sending their own taxes due to the government every year. Even better, if payment of taxes could be deferred until EVERY TWO YEARS, being due about six months PRIOR TO the Congressional elections, then we would elect a much different Congress in these election cycles.

We wouldn't have these trillion dollar undeclared wars and some of the nonsense spending that is currently used to buy votes, but just imagine the job creation and prosperity. Maybe we can get enough folks to visualize freedom from the usurpation of the FED to make this dream come true. But then maybe there are too many people who would prefer their dwindling dollar and assets, and higher gas and consumer prices so that we would have something to whine about. Hmm? NOT

Come November I hope Americans have voted him out.

What does it matter. They rarely spend gas taxes where it's supposed to go, infrastructure & reconditioning/refurbishment.

Wait for the freakout, and now the gears are turning in the politicians devious little minds on ways to make up for that loss. Think of what happened to the internet. The big draw of buying online was no taxes, but states and the feds are constantly thinking up new schemes to get the taxes one way or another.

Ah yes, the unintended consequences of nanny-state mandates. Get the gov't out of peoples lives and let the markets work. The solution to this "problem" is NOT to raise gas taxes!!!

This road tax should be based on miles driven not on gasoline used. We do need to take care of our roads. This would eliminate the person with an electric vehicle not paying any tax for driving and if someone does not drive, they would not pay any road tax.

I don't even assume the 54.5mpg standard proposed by the Obama administration will ever come to reality in 2025. It will be replaced by one of the Presidents between now and then with his/her own proposal.

The government is going to lose the money one way or another. Either the cars are going to become more efficient and use less gasoline and/or people are going to start using cars less and find other forms of transportation which they can afford. The end result is consumer gasoline consumption is going to lessen per individual.

Have you ever wondered what American automobiles would be like if they were designed more by the manufacturers and less by the Government?

It's questionnable as to whether they were smart enough to make the correlation of lower consumption/lower tax income. The out of control spenders will find a way to make up the difference which means more taxes on something else. Don't forget, states will also have this problem.

NOT TO WORRY. They'll just increase the tax to make up the difference. Just like everything else they tax into oblivion.

This $57B is over ~10 years, so assuming flat rate of tax income decrease, that's $5.7B/year - merely a drop in the bucket of an $11T national debt, growing at $1T+ annually. We need to push our lawmakers to pass a budget (which hasn't been done in 3+ years) in order to determine how to make up for this (and many other) budget shortfalls.

I'm sure they will find a way to extract the money from our pockets to make up for the reduction in gas tax collections.
