Local fracking control often lacking

bucyrustelegraphforum.com -- A pump capable of extracting nearly 5,000 gallons of water per minute sits idle adjacent to a bridge over the Licking River near the Licking-Knox county line.

A black hose, attached on one end to the pump, snakes next to a township road for a half-mile before entering a drilling site closed to the public.

Millions of gallons of water from the river, later combined with sand and chemicals, will be used to blast open fissures in a mile-deep shale formation to free fossil fuels, a process known commonly as "fracking."

Officials in Newark, where the Licking River is the primary source of water, say the loss of water won't be a problem unless there's a drought, but the law says that if it reached that point the government would have no authority to make drillers stop withdrawing from t

Letmeeatcake, LOL, "attack"??? Really???

NHL most often accuses me of lying without a bit of fact. Just look down this thread...."The 'smoke and mirrors' along with tons of misinformation supplied by the oil and drilling industry are all we ever see here from the doc!"

NHL is a big girl or boy. Suppose you let NHL or myself defend ourselves. Think that's fair???

Pepper....

Do you think your last post attacking NHLiveFree in such a manner is appropriate, polite, or cognizant that some members do have opposing views? One of the tenants after all of GB is respect for other's views.

I have found that we can get along much better if we don't try to put down the opposition in such a manner. We are here unless I missed something, to discuss the issues. The issue here is 'home rule' in OHIO of fracking impact.

NHL, how's your good buddy, ol' lovable Al? You know, the one that resigned in shame because of his love of crucfifying oil and gas companies? Remember how you posted praise and accolade for him?

Well howdy NHL! Anytime you want to refute my posts back that up with some facts.

The truth shall set you free!

PROVEN FACT:

The Environmental Protection Agency has dropped its claim that an energy company contaminated drinking water in Texas, the third time in recent months that the agency has backtracked on high-profile local allegations linking natural-gas drilling and water pollution.

The agency told a federal judge it withdrew an administrative order that alleged Range Resources Corp. had polluted water wells in a rural Texas county west of Fort Worth. Under an agreement filed in U.S. court in Dallas, the EPA will also drop the lawsuit it filed in January 2011 against Range, and Range will end its appeal of the administrative order.

In addition to dropping the case in Texas, the EPA has agreed to substantial retesting of water in Wyoming after its methods were questioned. And in Pennsylvania, it has angered state officials by conducting its own analysis of well water—only to confirm the state’s finding that water once tainted by gas was safe.

Very well said JustDrill4Oil, your comment is right on the mark.

Lately it has been PROVEN that the 'smoke and mirrors' have all been from the EPA and the anti hydraulic fracturing crowd.

Excellent comments PDQBlues!

There seems to be lots of smoke and mirrors with some of the comments. This is an Ohio issue, and often with States with little experience with modern Fracking, the state can be behind the times with their statutes.

==>And the fracking industry is pushing for voluntary self-imposed regulations.<==

Good. They know more about their industry than anyone else.

The only thing I'd change is that anyone that lies in their testimony about the rules should face personal liability for the harm caused by their lie. In other words, no hiding behind a corporate shield. Do-gooders that make stuff up to stop the process should also be held accountable personally for the costs their lies add to the process.

PDQBlues: "Lacking? Try almost nonexistent!..."
___________________________________________________

Each state is responsible for regulation of the oil & gas industry within their borders.

A couple examples:
Texas Railroad Commission
Michigan Department of Environmental Quality

Here's a link to find the regulatory bodies by state:

Lacking? Try almost nonexistent! And the fracking industry is pushing for voluntary self-imposed regulations. Much like how Enron was able to avoid being the biggest fraudulent corporation ever. Yeah, that didn't work either.

Let's regulate golf courses more! They are really 'EVIL' water users!!!

The amount of water used, per day, to irrigate the world’s golf courses is 2.5 BILLION gallons (Water Info Program CO).

WOW! Horrors!

Small localities have to depend on speed traps for revenue source from the roughnecks!

Oh, by the way, 3.9 TRILLION gallons of water are consumed in the United States per month. (AWWA Journal, June 2006)

That part of Ohio is lightly populated and is the poorest. The people could certainly need the work.

I noticed several are still unsure or don’t know about hydraulic fracturing. Please check out these sites, FracFocus Chemical Disclosure Registry, Hydraulic Fracturing Facts, or others where you can better understand the process, groundwater protection, what chemicals are used, etc. Yes, the 2nd site above is provided by Chesapeake Energy, but the information presented simple easy to understand manor and is factual.

A little excerpt from one of the sites:
“Despite being successfully used by the natural gas and oil industry since the 1940s, hydraulic fracturing continues to draw attention due to concerns over the contents of hydraulic fracturing fluids and potential contamination of groundwater, despite the fact that there is virtually no risk that the mixture can escape from the targeted zone. Most of the chemicals used in hydraulic fracturing can be found in common, everyday household products such as laundry detergents, cleaners and beauty products. Some are even present in food and beverage items. While some additives have historically been classified as toxic, many, such as pH-adjusting agents and chlorine-based sanitization aides, are found in approximately the same concentration as in your backyard swimming pool.”

I did work in the “oil field” in the early to mid 80’s in the Austin Chalk play for about 4 years between starting college and finishing my degree so I do have a better understanding than most about hydraulic fracturing, oil & gas well drilling and operations, etc. Since returning to college, I have not had any financial interests (job, investments, etc.) in the oil & gas business other than being a consumer so there are no financial motivations for me share the truth about hydraulic fracturing other than getting a fair price as a consumer.

Ignorance vs Stupidity
The intrinsic difference is that ignorance simply implies lack of awareness about something, while stupidity denotes the inability of a person to understand something due to insufficient intelligence, thus leading to the misinterpretation of a fact.

Ignorance can be removed by the acquisition of knowledge.

As much as I like drilling if there's a drought someone should go and blow the pump to smithereens if it was on.
