There's also the fact that the "Alberta Clipper" "would almost entirely be located along an existing Enbridge pipeline right-of-way", as well as the fact that it delivers oil to US refineries to be used in the US, not to be sold to foreign countries.

326 miles isn't that much to maintain. Going all the way to South Texas is a lot longer and harder to keep up with and oil spills will happen easier.

In fact, what systems has TransCanada set up to handle spills. We have seen how much of a problem that has been in the past...

Keystone Pipeline Ensnared in Politics, Hypocrisy and political football. One side says Yes, the other side says No. Canada says they will sell it to the Chinese and the US says - So What! If, when or where the pipeline is built, protect the ground and surface waters And wet lands, wildfowl and natural areas at all costs. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

Bezalel - "The NHLiveFree post ignores the fact that the administration DID approve a similar pipeline."
As you ignore the fact that that pipeline went to Wisconsin. How many supertankers dock in Wisconsin? How much oil, or refined products, gets exported to foreign countries from Wisconsin?
The oil that's going to Wisconsin is refined and sold in the US.

Many GasBuddies have a “my mind is made up so don’t bother me with the facts” attitude on this boondoggle. As NHLF points out, just below, the junk oil from the tar sands is largely slated for export, so it would have little impact on US supply. And, as was noted in a recent GB Blog, completion of the pipeline would very likely increase gas prices in the midwestern states. Be careful what you wish for . . .

Too bad many posters here do not read the TransCanada public disclosures on this grand scheme. It is simply the Royal Dutch Shell plan to get as much Alberta crude to the duty free port Valero owns on the Texas Gulf Coast. No amount of this crude is guaranteed for use in the USA. Wake up and read disclosures. The KeystoneXL provides the USA with nothing but a few temporary jobs on pipeline construction that are spread out over two. No help at all to the USA in either increasing our energy supplies or lowering the prices we pay. Great scheme that was likely devised by Enron alumni in the oil industry. Big Oil loves us!

I agree with abcdMA: "Obama is pandering to which ever side will give him the most money and votes, not what is in the country's best interest."

The Keystone pipeline was following the path to Texas because the refineries in Texas wanted it. The oil is already flowing in Canadian pipelines and will increase with time to the east and west coast of Canada and to the world. If the US doesn't want it then Canada and the rest of the world does!

The Canadians want the Keystone pipeline because it is easier to build it across the terrain of the Great Plains as opposed to trying to build it across the Rockies and the coastal fault lines. If Canada intended to sell the oil to the U.S., they could simply pipe it to North Dakota where refineries could be built to satisfy the northern and Midwestern market of the U.S. The real reasons they want the pipeline built all the way to the gulf coast is that it is easier to fill tankers for foreign distribution and export beyond the U.S. The pipeline itself has very little long term benefit to the U.S.
