Honda Tops Again in Efficiency on U.S. roads

Reuters.com -- WASHINGTON, (Reuters) - Japan's Honda Motor Co Ltd (7267.T) has again produced the most fuel efficient and least polluting vehicles on American roads, the U.S. government projections for 2009 showed on Friday.

South Korea's Hyundai-Kia (005380.KS) and Toyota Motor Corp (7203.T), also based in Japan, followed closely behind, respectively, for the second straight year, according to preliminary performance data released by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

Overseas automakers mainly sell compacts and sedans in the United States, while their U.S. rivals produce more pickups, SUVs and vans, which generally get poorer gas mileage and emit more tailpipe emissions.

Honda and Toyota also lead the U.S. market in gasoline/electric hybrid vehicles, the most fuel efficient and cleanest car

milespergallon says : "There are patents for automotive aftermarket to get 100 mpg plus. makes me wonder why they don't bring them out!"

LOL! Want one? Look up the Pogue Carburetor. The complete design and all inforumation submitted for the patent is available with a simple Yahoo search. Build one of them babies and great mileage is yours for the taking! No acceleration, mind you, so from one red light to the next you won't even approach the speed limit!

For it's vintage (1998), my Honda Civic was relatively frugal with fuel.

Besides aircraft, lawnmowers and power equipment, Honda does make something else that Chevy can’t compete with…fuel economy!

It means nothing to me if one company has better overall efficiency than another. I'm no tgoing to own every vehicle that company makes! I would only be buying ONE, and that is where efficiency counts.

Government Motors commercials would lead you to think Honda has lost its edge. But it appears that Honda is still the better choice for economy.

I have always (with two exceptions) driven Honda products. They are easy to work on and provide superior reliability. My first was an '87 Prelude which I sold with more than 489,000 miles on it and I only changed the clutch, oil, and tires.

love my honda fit and I has ample cargo space with it's majic rear seat positions. It gets 35 miles to the gallon and handles very well on windy freeways (not like most small cars.

Way to go Honda....

Maybe our auto companies simply need to tweak the big vehicles they have been producing. By I get the impression that in interests to maintain profits, they kept the old cash cows the way they were. Now look where they are at.

If the measure is the total emissions of your fleet, then you can skew your status as an efficient company by not including any inefficient vehicles in your fleet. So, that fact then begs the question: why isn't Tesla the most fuel efficient car company? The only vehicle they produce is an all electric roadster that gets 100+ mpg equivalent but produces no tailpipe emissions at all.
