High-mpg Taylors drive a Volkswagen Passat 1,626 miles on one tank of gas

AutoBlogGreen -- John and Helen Taylor – Volkswagen calls them "mileage experts" and "the world's most fuel efficient couple" – recently drove a stock 2012 Passat TDI SE all the way from Houston, TX to Sterling, VA without refueling. That's 1,626.1 miles from just 19.3 gallons. Bad with numbers? VW has done the math for you: it's 84.1 miles per gallon (we came up with 84.2, but who's counting?).

The three-day trip happened earlier this month, and it turns out that the Taylors are not new to the high mileage game. They have previously set the "48 Contiguous U.S. States Fuel Economy Guinness World Record." Still, the new Passat TDI record is impressive and it mimics some of the ways that Gerdes runs his hypermiling trips. As you can see in the gallery, the gas tank was filled to the brim with gas (see here)

.
The question still remains of how many miles the vehicle was towed, trucked, or trailered during the trip? If it took me three days to drive 1600 miles I would slit my wrists (especially with 2 people capable of sharing the driving).

Maybe checking out the link to their site mentioned in the article would be helpful. They hold several hypermiller records. You don't have to be a "hazard" on the road to get better economy. Conservative driving and using their 30 tips will yield better fuel economy in whatever you drive.

I love my TDI's but i can't believe everything I read. They need to be more forthcoming with how they did it, what speed and all of that kinda stuff.

No mention of how they did it. And their website is non-existent.

Big momma gov will not do with less taxes so we save fuel they will just raise taxes on fuel to make up the diff. Either way we will pay. If we go back to horses they would tax hay.

although that's not practical mileage (or driving), the small diesels do get better mileage than the same size gas engines. wish the 2.5l diesel had been available here for my mini van.

.
At an estimated 43 MPG Highway, it is IMPOSSIBLE for them to get 84.2 MPG even if the trip were non-stop all the way downhill!!!!!!!!! Especially claiming its a stock 2012 TDI Passat.

Since it was a three day trip IE NOT non-stop, wasn't downhill, and Obama can fake his birth certificate, putting a sticker on the fuel door means nothing! The whole fuel system wasn't sealed! The officer verifying the signed sticker at trips end has no idea if that was really the other officer's signature, and on and on.

With an aquarium pump and two hours, I could refuel the fuel tank from several places along the fuel system bypassing the need to open the fuel filler door. More over just because it took 19.3 gallons to supposedly fill the fuel tank doesn't mean that the vehicle doesn't have an auxiliary fuel tank that was already full. Only vehicles that have been fully inspected and every part of the fuel system sealed at one end of the trip and verified at the other end by the same person that sealed it should be allowed to be in any mileage contest!

And BTW MASTERMARINER, we have plenty of Oil so we should be able to drive whatever we want and in my case NEED to be driving. The problem is the EPA, DOE, and Dumbocrats that have caused high Oil prices by not allowing us to get at all the oil and build new refineries!

Just goes to show we have the technology all we need is to for-go the gas guzzling monsters that the majority drive.
