GM has plenty of time to develop cars people don't want in twice the time because they don't really have the pressure to be that profitable anymore.

GM may be getting itself in trouble investing so much in low volune vehicles with a long development time. There's a lot to be said for taking the long view, but you have to survive today, first.

FTFA: "Still, Charlie Freese, executive director of GM's global fuel-cell activities, pointed out to reporters that GM had plenty of opportunities to kill its hydrogen program during its bankruptcy -- but didn't."
How much of that do you think was the Administration telling them, "No, this looks good for us; keep it going."?

"Drive On got a look at the fuel cells yesterday at a presentation in Burbank, Calif. The new one, at right, is half the size, 220 pounds lighter and uses a third of the expensive platinum needed in the original, which is being real-world tested in a fleet of 119 Chevrolet Equinox SUVs. (It was an even 120, but one got totaled in an accident. No hydrogen escaped.)"
So much for those alarmists that keep on bringing up the Hindenburg, when hydrogen is mentioned as an energy source, yet they keep forgetting that gasoline is highly explosive as well....(REMEMBER THE BROUHAHA ABOUT THE FORD PINTO GAS TANK EXPLOSIONS?)
As for the current availability of hydrogen, well when cars started using gasoline as a power power source (steam was in use before gasoline) there wasn't a gas station at every corner either.

"Thats a long ways away."
2015? That's only 5 years. Pretty darn close, if you ask me.
In fact, I think it's too close. I applaud the effort to get hydrogen going, but I don't see that it will be a feasible alternative in 5 years, beyond perhaps fleet sales.
On the other hand, in 5 years, if they could cut the size, weight and cost of batteries in half, the infrastructure is largely in place, so that would be a clear winner over hydrogen.

I see several problems that need to be solved including:
1. Purchase cost of the vehicle 2. Cost of the hydrogen 3. Local availability of the hydrogen

The fuel cell is a good idea if hydrogen production is clean and the fuel costs are competitive. This will also drive a new road tax model where taxes are assessed based upon the miles driven each year and not by fuel purchases.

Who can afford this 2015 model vehicle. If our government keeps spending at a rate resulting in trillion dollar+ deficits every year for the foreseeable future, it will take a miracle to avoid a depression by then. I imagine they will be lucky to find anyone able to buy it!

They better have cut enough weight and complexity to get the cost down by a factor of 10 or 100, or else it will be a non-starter like Honda's $100,000 (or was it $500,000) FCX Clarity.

Jeff4U: Before you can have "infrastructure for hydrogen distribution or sales", you're got to have a business model to make money making H.

Irrelevant. No infrastructure exists for hydrogen distribution or sales. Perhaps 10-20 years into the future this will be viable option.

I think this is best of the alternative fuel sources. Clean, plentiful and can refuelled in an acceptable amount of time.

When and if they ever produce it for the mass market and at a price the average person can afford it will be great. Until then it is just a bunch of hot air.
