Flying Wind Turbine Steals the Show at Energy Department Convention

Oilprice.com -- This week the Energy Department’s program for long-shot technologies, ARPA-E, is hosting a convention in Washington where teams of inventors can display their ideas to potential investors and government officials. The technologies are not currently market ready, merely prototype ideas hoping to intrigue the right person and receive funding for more research.

One of the most interesting prototypes shown was a flying wind turbine being developed by Makani Power of Alameda, California.

the closed mindedness of some folks here reminds me of the Middle Ages when people said the earth was flat.

They must have left something important out of the news piece. The way it's written, it looks a lot like a perpetual motion machine.

Whatever happened to those venturi towers that would make electricity without the big, nasty, ugly, noisy, bird-killing blades high up in the air? That, and because it was omnidirectional, it didn't subject the blades to the high torque forces the current technology does ... making the blades slew around in the changing wind. That was gonna be the answer to all the world's problems at one time as I recall. Pardon me if I fail to get excited about each and every one of these gee-whiz technologies.

Great, more tax dollars being spent on iffy projects. How about politicians stealing less from the people, and letting US invest in whatever we want?

Brilliant! Way to think outside the box. I'd rather see a bunch of these off the California coast than a bunch of oil rigs adding more pollution to our beaches!

This looks like an interesting idea to me. I can see some places where that may be useful but like all alternatives this would fill a niche and be one part of a large array of energy sources.
