Digital Trends -- With an EPA-certified 105 MPGe, Ford will undoubtedly be driving (not riding) on cloud nine. With the latest figures in, the American automaker is wasting no time bringing the fight to its closest competitor -- Nissan's Leaf.
Ford has come out swinging in the battle to be the most “fuel-efficient” car in the country. The American automaker — hot off the heels of an EPA certified 105 miles per gallon equivalent rating for its soon-to-be released Focus Electric – will be truly elated with the EPA’s recent fuel efficiency certification.
The EPA’s findings actually best the Blue Oval’s own estimate by 5 miles when the company stated back in December that the all-electric Focus would be able to get about 100 MPGe.

Inbreds and EV's are too high priced for me. With the high price of a new EV or Inbred, I will drive my current vehicle into the ground before buying anything new, used, EV, Inbred, diesel, hydrogen, alternative fuel, CNG, concept or anything else. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. Consider using other forms of less expensive transportation to lower your cost, if possible. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

I'll be more interested when I start to see independent repair shops advertising deals on replacement batteries for these. Or will the body rust out just when the batteries go dead and make it a sell for scrap car when its battery life cycle is over?

Buddy, do you enjoy peeing in everyone's cornflakes? How about a little positivity, once in awhile? Now onto some clarification. Every new technology is expensive at first. Anyone remember how expensive PCs were even 10 years ago? How about cellphones? Technology doesn't improve incrementally. It improves exponentially. EV prices will be comparable to regular cars in five to ten years. In the meanwhile, somebody has to be first. The automobile was a rich man's toy once, also. As to charging time, all new EVs have a quick charge option that will charge a nearly dead EV battery to 80% charge in under 30 minutes. If you're on the road, pull over, plug in, and get some lunch at Chili's, which will probably have an EV parking spot up front with the charger. Top off the rest of the charge at home using the most basic 110V outlet. For a quicker charge at home, use the 220V circuit that you use for the clothes dryer. A full charge will use 12kWh of electricity which on average costs $3.00, even cheaper if you charge the car at night if your power company uses off peak pricing. The battery should last the life of the vehicle; 10 years or 150,000 miles. These batteries are never fully discharged like laptop batteries so their lifespan is much longer. Any doubts? Prius battery technology has been on the road for over a decade and nobody talks about those battery packs wearing out. For the record, we are talking about a pure electric vehicle, not a hybrid so there is no gasoline involved. They used the 105mpg(e) to just give the consumer a common frame of reference. That number is derived by taking the thermal energy of one gallon of gasoline and using it to run an electrical generator at a powerplant. One gallon of gasoline will produce 12kWh of electricity. And for the record, I own a 2007 Prius with 95,000 miles on it, all of it trouble free and yes I would buy another one. Try to have a little faith in technology, everybody. Without it, we'd be lighting our homes with whale oil and dying of cholera at 35 years old.
