I'm guessing even the Einstein's we have in Congress now can figure out the subsidies have had the opposite affect as originally intended. Around here farmers even get paid to NOT put crops in the ground - AMAZING - ALL SUBSIDIES on the books need to be review and tweaked by the fiscally responsible ( tall order with OUR government officials ).

With corn losses expected to exceed 50%, not doing so is going to have a substantial impact on food prices. In this economy, the last thing we need is major inflation at the grocery store due to ethanol.

The drought is here to stay and get ready for soaring food prices. What a waste of water for no profitable return. All that money spent on ethanol should be turned over to research for crops that use a minimal amount of water to produce food.

I've done some research on ethanol. It is in no way cost efficient. Even vehicles designed to run on E85 get fewer miles per gallon doing so. The decrease in mileage is greater than the reduced cost. It does not pay. In addition we get higher costs on other corn related products. As with most Government mandates it is a lose lose proposition.

The other reasons involve politics, votes and kickbacks. Get rid of the mandate permanently and let the free market reign.

The drought impact on corn will defiantly give the food manufacturers a reason to increase food prices that they will not reduce during bumper crop years or at any time in the future. Once the grocery prices go there is little change. So give he hard working farmers of america a chance to make a little extra and help thin out the fat wallets of the middle east.

You said, "Reducing ethanol would increase price." I am puzzled about this issue. My local truckstop sells E0 and I use it. The prices since April, when they began selling it, have varied from below E10 to as high as $.45 above E-10. Currently, it is $.02 above Pemium. It is confusing as this and one other station are changing prices up to four times a day. Still, E0 enables my 2012 Chevrolet Sonic to get up to 41 MPG which is much better than E10. The vehicle is rated at 25/35 MPG with a small notation on the window sticker that 41 MPG is possible (I think they are referencing the smaller 1.4L engine with a 6-speed manual). I have a 1.8L with a six-speed automatic transmission. With the turbo, a $700 option, the 1.4L gets the same HP, 138, but does have a bit higher torque. I opted for the 1.8L and no turbo. The turbo, by the way doesn't require premium fuel, just regular.
