Offshore oil project will spark N. L. construction boom

The Expositor -- Newfoundland and Labrador will give the green light to the $5-billion Hebron offshore oil project today, setting off a long-awaited construction boom that's expected to bring a small army of skilled, young workers back to the province over the next three years.

Calvin Farewell, 27, hopes to be among them.

The Newfoundlander currently commutes each month to work in the tarsands near Fort McMurray, Alta. He says he's eager to learn details of how much work the oil consortium will be required to carry out at the shipyard in his hometown of Marystown.

There must be reasons that current oil development is not being done in US.
I don't think environmental concerns are a major part of it. A lot of special deals exist in the oil business.
There is a small oil company in Ohio that has put wells next to and in some recreational areas and if you didn't know they were there you would not realize it.
Lots of interior land is available or already controlled by oil companies and not being developed.

Wish everyone would stop with the oil push. New drilling won't help right now. Energy & funds should be expended on clean burning, renewable, alternate fuels sources. Plenty of job openings and with the success individuals and small, unfunded groups are having a full force drive at this instead of more dirty oil (which will run out eventually anyway if burning it doesn't destroy us first) would give the world total independence from fossil fuels.

Drilling for more Oil IS the solution! We need to stop the drain of the dollar from leaving this country to nations that are not friendly to the US. We HAVE TO replace most of those imports with local sources of Oil.
Yes we need new forms of energy, is everyone ready to have a nuclear Power Plant, wind turbines, Solar towers, or a Dam built in your back yard? If you say no to any of these you better want to drill anywhere now. We need all forms of energy NOW! Oil is more available at present than all other forms of energy.

We still need to develop alternative fuels so that we will be truly independent of foreign oil in the Americas.

More power to Canada. As the cost of oil will certainly rise, I am sure that they will get some of their FIVE BILLION DOLLARS back from this investment.

I wonder how much this investment could return if it was invested into alternatives to oil. Perhaps FIVE BILLION DOLLARS could have been directed to Arizona to build more solar collectors for electrical generation. Or, perhaps FIVE BILLION DOLLARS could have been invested in Texas in T. Boone Pickens wind generator farms. Or FIVE BILLION DOLLARS could have been invested in production and distribution of hydrogen.

Whatever. It is the oil company’s money. At least the tobacco companies had the foresight to diversify and invest in food industries.

Drilling will help us in the short run since they already know where these massive reserves are at.
We need to Lobby Washington and Demand that We start Drilling here, keep all Production here, build more refineries away from costal areas, and stay the path towards alternate energy sources. (T.BOONE PICKENS) Anyone?
We cannot depend on the Ethanol route either as this route has already had the effect of higher food prices along with the higher Transportation costs to get the food to market.

$5 BILLION!!! They are not expecting to sell any of that oil brought in for anything less than $150 a barrel. Especially since it will take years to see appreciable amounts of oil from the field.

Vote con gress out! They had their chance and did nothing to help us when we needed them! Spent all that time on a few hundred people because they might have used steroids while the other 300 million or so of us were getting squeezed by oil prices! Tell them their fired in november!IMHO.

That's great for keeping the petroleum market supplied but you know that $5 billion in costs will be ultimately paid for by consumers. Where are the renewables? I'm tired of being financially drained by the oil industry!
