Gas price decline nears 40 cents

CNN Money -- NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Gasoline prices have fallen nearly 40 cents a gallon from their record highs after 34 straight days of declines, according to a daily survey released Wednesday.

The price of regular gasoline fell to $3.717 a gallon from $3.73 a day earlier, according to a survey of gas station credit card swipes from motorist group AAA and the Oil Price Information Service.

Gas prices have fallen more than 9% since hitting a high of $4.114 a gallon on July 16. The drop mirrors a 22% decline in crude price futures from their record high of $147.27 a barrel.

I'm wondering, are gas stations still claiming that they're only making one penny per gallon profit, or that they're loosing money, or now they're making 50 cents or more per gallon trying to catch up ?

EagleEye16 is right, don't get lulled into thinking this small decrease is great because it is not great. We need to drill here, Drill Now and quit being so dependent on opec etc that want to destroy the US.

With oil prices falling 22% and gas only 9% there seems to be a lot of profit making going on here.

It's nice to see the decrease, but it still isn't any bargain when you consider it increased by 3-4 times that amount, earlier this year.

We need more domestic drilling. Windmills will not reduce gas prices.

We need to keep the pressure on the auto industry to give us cars which run on alternative fuel (air, electric, hydrogen....) We need to increase our production of alternatives (wind/solar/hydro-electric, others....)
We need to keep the pressure on congress to allow for more domestic production (keep jobs here, keep $ here, alternatives (tax incentives for putting up solar/wind....) We need to vote out the Idiots who won't allow more domestic drilling (bye bye Nancy!)

It's decline in Austin nearly 60 cents though it is still over a dollar higher than this time last year, still too high.

too much of greed and political cloutof the Big oil is causing this ..
There is no free market here for the Oil. when the demand is going down they talk about world ... when that is down they talk about politics ... then hurricanes .. then some Bull .. they keep the gas prices high ..

Amusing how we get pleased to lower prices 40 cents after it goes up two or three times that amount.

Actually gas should be selling for the low $3/gallon based on today's cost per barrel. $114 = 34 gallons of distillate.

Since this decline has started - the price of regular has dropped over $1 a gallon and more.

Right on target MHEWER! I've been saying the same thing for two weeks now. During May and June, gas would jump 4-5 percent on 2 percent jump in oil prices, now when it goes the other way, gas is lagging way behind. No wonder, the profits for most retailers like BP, SHELL, EXXON/MOBIL have gone through the roof.
