Offshore oil project will spark N. L. construction boom

The Expositor -- Newfoundland and Labrador will give the green light to the $5-billion Hebron offshore oil project today, setting off a long-awaited construction boom that's expected to bring a small army of skilled, young workers back to the province over the next three years.

Calvin Farewell, 27, hopes to be among them.

The Newfoundlander currently commutes each month to work in the tarsands near Fort McMurray, Alta. He says he's eager to learn details of how much work the oil consortium will be required to carry out at the shipyard in his hometown of Marystown.

THese kinds of projects should help push up supplies and in turn depressing prices. Hopefully here in the USA we will do the same.

They need the oil. Newfoundland/Labrador has the highest gas prices in Canada (and Canada's lowest prices are higher than California's).

With very low gasoline inventories, we’re one refinery accident away from another huge price run up.

This is good for Canada, but these are more jobs which are being sent to other countries (sorry, Canada is not the USA for those who failed Geography - But I would rather support Canada than the middle east....) The USA has ship yards which are sitting empty, we should be putting US workers to work building oil rigs, then employ them on the rigs. We should also use closed Auto plants to produce batteries, Solar panels, wind mills, and Electric cars....

Is it just my imagination or are the Canadians more serious about finding oil and natural gas than the US is? Maybe, it's from watching Ice Road Truckers too much!

thwadi is correct. Ohio & Michigan both have areas that have seen oil production in the past, but stopped when cheaper middle eastern crude was discovered. They already have the rights. They're not being hampered by Congress. So what's their problem with on-shore oil production???

Drill? Diversify our energy sources. More nuclear, solar, wind, etc. Put the oil speculators back on Wall St. selling stocks to real corporations rather than driving up the cost of the average guy's energy. Whew! Just wait 'til we have to start heating our houses at these rates.

US oil companies do not want to spend their $ drilling. It is too easy to sit back and raise prices and make record profits. Drilling cuts into their profits and takes years to recoup their investment.

There must be reasons that current oil development is not being done in US.
I don't think environmental concerns are a major part of it. A lot of special deals exist in the oil business.
There is a small oil company in Ohio that has put wells next to and in some recreational areas and if you didn't know they were there you would not realize it.
Lots of interior land is available or already controlled by oil companies and not being developed.
