NYC aiming to help motorists find available on-street parking- and fast

GasBuddy Blog -- The New York City Department of Transportation recently announced that it wants to help motorists find on-street parking- without even having to drive around.

It seems a bit ironic- the pilot to help motorists find parking without having to drive around, but that's exactly what the city is aiming to do. NYC DOT installed nearly 200 "high-tech" parking sensors along a busy parking corridor a few months ago to see how the devices planted in the road would handle NYC conditions- that is constantly being driven over, stepped on, and beaten up. The sensors, made in Holland by Nedap AVI, cost about $250US each, and two are needed for each parking spot. The sensors have been provided at no cost by the three companies involved in the pilot...

I sure wish that NY would get real hard to draw people down town when it cost an arm and leg just to park a vehicle.

Seattle has implemented a similar program, except what they did was raise the cost of parking to $5.00 per half hour. Wow now we have more parking than we can use but fewer shoppers.

I can just imagine the next story... sensors stolen or defaced.

It's not that difficult to finds a place to park as far as parking garages or pay lots but street parking will always be a matter of being at the right place at the right time. A better study would start with the demand ratio and those statistics. In Greenwich Village on a weekend for instance, as you've just gotten out of your parked car, several hopeful motorists will immediately ask you if you're (just arriving back to your car and) leaving for want of the space you just took.

There are parking garage websites that tell the locations and one even has a printable $20 off coupon usable at any of 6 locations within Manhattan.

To avoid the texting and driving problem they would have to install electronic billboards.

Gee, they don't want texting and driving. But, what if you forgot to bring up the app. You'll have to start it and maybe go through some menus.

Holy mixed messages Batman!

Sounds like a great idea. Parking is a serious problem here in Montreal in certain areas. Some people have had to park a mile away from their home. I wonder how these sensors would work with the snow and ice covered parking places. The center of the road is usually always clean, but the parking spaces usually have lots of snow on them for days after a snowstorm.

$250 per parking spot to help drivers find a parking spot fast? Really? Who is driving this investment? And is the whole stae paying for it? Seems kind of wasteful

Somewhere in that is a money grab. NYC doesn't do anything unless there

@ BJDorval: Don't know where you get any idea that they're not paying their "fair share of taxes" unless you've been nibbling on Obama's cud.

Did anyone but me notice that good old American know how was missing in the development of this technology. So what happened to all that money from the Bush Tax Cuts that was supposed to be invested by the so called job creators, who now have the unmitigated temerity to not be willing to pay their fair share of taxes?
