Worst of oil spike is over- U.S. poll

The Globe And Mail -- WASHINGTON — Most Americans think that the worst of the fuel price spike that pushed gasoline above $4 (U.S.) per gallon has passed, but they have little hope that the housing market will stage a swift recovery, according to a Reuters/Zogby poll released on Wednesday.

The economy has jumped to the top of voters' concerns this election year, eclipsing the Iraq War, and that has put the housing bust and rising inflation squarely in the spotlight.

The poll of 1,089 likely voters found that just under 13 per cent thought gasoline prices would rise a lot between now and the end of the year. About one quarter thought prices would rise a little, while one in three thought they would drop a little and 18 per cent said they would stay about the same.

The fuel crisis is far from over. As a nation we Americans have much too short of a memory. Our problems with foreign oil will continue as long as we depend on foreign oil.

Don't believe one bit of the polls! There are a bunch of us that will tell the pollster just the opposite of what we believe. We hate those unsolicited phone calls.

We are still in a price rise. Just because gas dropped about $0.40 from the top, we are still paying a $1.00 more than a year ago. It will be nice if it goes down below $3.00. But if it does, it will only be for a short time, and we will never see below $3.00 again. A year from now we will be wishing for gas below $3.50. (I just purchased a tank at $3.22)

They didn't ask me! Maybe gas prices is still top on my list! Just because it came down 50 cents (probably temporarily) doesn't mean it's no longer a problem!!! We are still at the mercy of the oil companies!!

We may have seem to spike on gas but we still have to not seem the rest of the affects. Housing, airline and the rest is coming in small inker mets. Called inflation. Hang on we all at to lose more. Greed will have a world affect.

DarthDad, you better go take Econ 101. A recession is two consecutive quarters of NEGATIVE growth. We have yet to have ONE quarter of NEGATIVE growth in GDP.

Therefore, we're a NOT in a recession, even if the idiots in the press say we are, just because they say so, does not make it reality. Remember you can't believe everything you read in the papers. Remember the news media has an agenda, and what is reported has a slant.

And yes, I learned that in My many Econ classes. (I have a Bachelor of Science in Econ from the U of Minnesota)

Who do they poll on these things? I'm not silly enough to think that the worst is over. I am just going to enjoy the slight decline in prices while it lasts.

Great! We can only hope the prices will keep declining. I won't be satisfied until it's closer to high $2's and low $3's.

Hopefully that is not a precursor to a return to our old driving and consumption habits and an increase in demand.

Of course they will rise. The gas companies have one last shot at us for the Labor Day weekend and they will do something. Check out the news where the Govt. is reporting supplies are down yet we have been driving less.

Part of the gloom that is going on is because of the news media. One bank failed just because someone reported that they were in trouble. The bank would still be in business today, and it depositers that lost millions in uninsured deposits would still be whole today. Know the facts before you speak.

One Cat 4 Gulf Hurricane is the only excuse they need to go back up. Failing that, they'll find something else - from the Russians sitting on the Transcaucus pipeline to the presidential election.

Who are "most Americans?" Who did they ask to get that idea? I sure don't think the worst is over. I'm not about to breathe a sigh of relief from the over $4 a gallon gas we'd been paying. It is only a matter of time, probably a short time, before it all goes back up again and never comes down.

Why should the average Joe know what's going to happen when the average analyst doesn't have a clue. No one agrees. No one can tell the future. If only I could then I'd be rich. LOL

Few are unhappy to see it behind us. Unfortunately the same same carbon dependency still exists
