So I have been driving my car Kelsey for a few months now; she's 13 years old and still looks and drives like new (was garage-kept before I had her).

About the time I got her, the service light began lighting up.

AutoZone said the codes meant the Exhaust Gas Recirculation had a position sensor malfunction... whatever the heck that's supposed to mean.

Should I be concerned? Help?

btw, this model uses the electric EGR instead of the vacuum, so the Haynes manual is absolutely useless on this problem... darn the luck.

Hey Schnautzr --

You ever get that EGR valve cleaned/replaced? If ya did, I bet that helped with your acceleration response too ...

dont know about an EGR position sensor, but you can clean out your EGR, because chunks of carbon deposit can make the needle valvee stick open, which causes chuggle at low speed and sluggish acceleration.

I've had to clean mine twice already.

Well today while I was in AutoZone I saw their banners hanging behind the counters and they've got different auto parts on them. Toward the bottom of one of them I saw "EGR Valve Position Sensor." It kind of looked like a plastic gas cap with a short metal rod sticking out, if I remember correctly. I still don't know where to find the thing in my car, but at least I know this part exists now. And the orange service light came on several times tonight after I left the first AutoZone (I was getting a license plate light and a brake light replaced, and searching for a watch battery. Had to go to two AutoZones and several stores to find the battery I needed.) The service light doesn't go off for at least a minute. I'm like, "Okay, I hear you," and she stays on.

It is common for the egr valves to start acting up on the older saturn. I'm not to sure what this sensor is that AutoZone was talking about--if your model is the one I'm thinking of it has a connector on top of the Valve. The valve itself runs about 250 to 325$ Cdn.

It can cause all kinds of problems if it gets bad enough eg. rough running, stalling, SES lite. Replacing it is fairly straight foreward and can be done in a few minutes. Run the engine a few seconds when you have the valve off to blow the carbon out of the passage before you put the new valve on

The older saturns can last a long time as long as the Maintenance is kept up. I've seen many with over 200000kms on them

OH...and does anyone else have this problem:

The car doesn't accelerate very well at speeds above 35mph--especially uphill.
