Time to run this question again. My insurance company considered my PT Cruiser an SUV and my suburban a station wagon - thoughts and opinions welcome.

SUV's are based off truck chassis and are usually set up for trailering and other heavier applications. The term Crossover is use for former station wagon models and anything else that is not quite a truck. Insurance companies call various models what ever a glorified clerk calls them and you can't change their classification very easily.

SUVs are built on truck chassis and with an off road profile . A PT Cruiser is neither although I have seen it labeled as an SUV. I've always viewed it as a lift back on a car chassis.

GM all. Thank you for the postings.
Titanic, I remember you mentioned that before. My mother's side is from, and some still are, in Plymouth.

One day, maybe the automakers will quit making cars entirely and just make "crossovers"; they're well on their way already

minivans killed off? They are still popular as ever.

the latest boom is the crossover. Why? Because it isn't exactly a "SUV" and it isn't a "van". Not gonna lie, i'd never be seen in a van, however, I wouldn't be caught in a crossover either! I'll take the "SUV", as long as it isn't a unibody.

the "big mama/papa" suvs are station wagon bodies on truck frames...the "crossover" suvs are station wagon bodies on car frames.... station wagon fell out of favor years ago, so the marketers started calling them suvs. minivans are passe now too. i guess both station wagons and minivans were killed by the suvs.

Hello again calypso93. I thought more about your PT Cruiser and checked it out on Wickipedia. It is described as "a retro styled compact automobile" but classified as a light truck in the US to meet CAFE (Corporate Average Fuel Economy) to allow for more profits in larger trucks.

Here is the link:

PT Cruiser

It seems the definition of an SUV is whatever benefits the insurance companies, the local governments and whoever else may obtain financial gain from and not the link definition I previously posted.

By the way, my wife is from Shickshinny, PA and I am from Pittsburgh, PA. I left there in 1969 when I enlisted in the military. Small world isn't it?

Wow. Thank you for the replies.
Rallye - The floor in a PT is not flat to the tailgate.
Cactus - I only quoted the insurance company because I needed a credible source for my question.
Titanic - Your thoughts are more closely in line with the info I've been accumulating. I enjoyed pitting the insurance company against Connecticut DMV with the PT.
goobnav- I sold both of them years ago, but the question still remains, what is an SUV?

Calypso,

You live in a messed up state that over charges for insurance due to the state being broken and taking bribes from the insurance industry.

How do I know this? I grew up there, in fact, was born in Wilkes-Barre and left in 93 and never looked back. Until the people of the Commonwealth or Communist state, I mean Commonwealth of Pennsylvania finally stop letting the fools in Philly and the 'Burgh from running PA into ground this will never change. Remember Rendell got busted more than once doing over 100 mph on the PA Turnpike and never lost his license.

If that was you or me in PA, we would have lost our license, our car, and our freedom. You need to stop worrying about how the insurance company rates your vehicle and start telling the people around you that you are mad as hell and you are not going to take it anymore.

Hello calypso93. What you posted is exactly what I've asked for years. Rather than speculate, here is a link from Wikipedia explaining an SUV:

SUV

Hello CactusBobs. You said, "What does it matter what "they" call it . Let them call it a toaster if it makes them happy . As long as your covered and at a fair price it makes no difference."

In South Carolina, it makes a huge difference what you call it as SUVs and Light Trucks are taxed at a much higher rate than a "standard" vehicle (e.g. sedans, station wagons, convertibles, etc.). In all counties, the yearly personal property tax is much more money for a SUV. I drive a 2008 Chevrolet Equinox, an SUV, and the property tax was $175.00 for this year. A friend bought a new and expensive SUV and his property tax was $999.99 for one year!

In both cases a PT Cruiser (also called a "Retro Vehicle" like the Chevrolet HHR) are really not off-road vehicles, and do not fit the original definition of an SUV, that being a vehicle built on a light truck chassis. These three mentioned vehicles are really cars (e.g.) by that definition.

Hello RalleRed. Your definition doesn't quite fit the link I've posted. Any station wagon has a "floor behind the front seats is flat to the tailgate" as do mini-vans yet some are SUVs and some are not. Many years ago this whole issue came up in "Consumer Reports" and they came up with the word "Crossover Vehicle". I'm still not sure what that means. The link I posted is the best explanation I could come up with. Maybe some other GBs have a different definition. Take care :-) .

One part of a working definition is that the floor behind the front seats is flat to the tailgate. My Element fits that definition.
