Hello contiki. 14smoke said it best, "Don't care what CR says, good or bad. I make up my own mind as to what I need when it's time to buy a car and then, within those parameters buy what I want. I'm much happier that way.

No one should use other people's criteria for buying a car, you won't be as happy with your purchase."

I have never used someone else's post as my own, but I could not have said it better. I would add, however, that a great deal of expense is involved in a vehicle purchase, so ultimately it is your money to spend and your decision on how to spend it.

So, you found 6 of them with problems, out of how many built that year?

Whatever contiki. Again, it's up to you, but, I prefer not to put all my eggs in someone else's basket.

I know people who owned a Chevy Cavalier had many problems, also know how poor Pontiac Firebird was with some owners......

I even saw a a Chevy dealership where they had a row of about 6 used Pontiac Firebirds lined up in their parking lot and the saleman said those vehicles have issues to them and not to consider them for good used vehicles...

I thank the Chevy saleman up in Northern Ontario for being sincere and truthful..

So you see how some see these vehicles 14smoke......they were not as lucky with their purchase as you were...............

I will trust Consumer Reports with their findings rather than experience it myself...........

14smoke I agree with you. If Brand X manufactures 1000 cars and 100 have a problem with brakes, 900 don't. If brand Y manufactures 1000 cars and 5 have a problem with brakes, 995 don't. Now, I have to ask myself the question, "Which car do I bet my money on, so that I have the least chance of having a problem with brakes?" No one including CR says every car of the same make and model will have a problem. It is only a guide, built on a huge sample. Kind of like picking someone for your fantasy football team. Should you base your pick on past performance or on which guy has a prettier jersey? By the way, I too had a cavalier that I bought for my kid. Nice car. No problems.

Most reliable: Honda/Acura,Toyota/Lexus

Least reliable: About any German brand, even though I'd love to have a 911 someday.

The problem is thinking that someone else's experience will be my own, which I have found to be patently not true in the case of two cars I have bought brand new.

A 1989 Chevy Cavalier, which, if I remember CR rating as fair to poor on reliability and quality. I had only one non-regular maintenance thing go wrong with that car in 180,000 miles of driving in just over six years and that was when the alternator went out.

I'm currently driving a 2002 Pontiac Firebird, of which CR was not a fan of either, and the only two problems I've had with it are a faulty window regulator on the driver's side and the fuel pump went out.

As I said, I discount was CR says because of the fact that just because someone else had a problem with a particular make and model does not mean I will. I prefer to make up my own mind.

When you ask tens of thousands of people the same questions you get a clear picture of which cars are more reliable and which are not. Of course there are folks on this board who cannot believe that their favorite car could have more problems than one they do not like. I have used CR for years to buy great products ranging from laundry soap to cameras, televisions to automobiles. They accept no ads so they owe nothing to manufacturers. They call it like they see it and there is so little of that these days I agree it is hard to believe something so unbiased could be real.

When I clinked on contiki's link to CR I did see more problems for the new Prius V:

2011-2012 Toyota Prius V hybrid will get an exhaust problem fixed
Toyota Motor Corp. announced a service campaign to fix its brand new Prius V, a wagon-like vehicle in its wildly popular gas-electric hybrid line. Similar to the hybrid sedan, the roomier Prius V captures the "waste heat" from its exhaust system. However, flawed components in the recovery system may cause the Prius V to leak engine coolant.

Good for US EV's!

I think the problem that Consumer Reports has is that we see so many "reviews" that are bought and paid for with advertising dollars, that people find it hard to believe anything they read. The information in the charts showing reliability do not come from Consumer Reports editorial staff, they come from thousands and thousands of people who actually own the cars. CR asks the same questions of every owner. What car do you own? What model? What year? Have you had to repair anything? If yes, what needed repair. If a model of car has more owner reports of a problem with, say, brakes, than the average car it gets a "worse than average" or "much worse than average" rating for brakes. If it gets less than the average number of complaints it gets a better or much better rating. There are many categories. A car may rate poorly for brakes but rate very well for engine. No editorial opinion, just a roll-up of owner responses. I think they help you in your buying concerns......

I have long suspected that Consumer Reports possesses a bias against American automobile manufacturers. As a result, I tend to view everything they say through a credibility filter.
