Hey I occasionally do. The last time I was crossing Ontario province, I picked up an Ojibwe woman and had a very interesting conversation about her culture and the problems on the Ojibwe reserve. I learned a bunch of things. Years ago we used to travel by hitch hiking a lot of that was hiking. I try to be careful who I pick up because some of the people are really unsavory types and some stink. But some are folks who just need a ride somewhere.

I agree with klownacide, Never have, never will! Unfortunately there's no one you can trust anymore and that's sad. I'm sure that there are some people who are off the road with their hood up who have true car problems. If I can, I phone Highway Patrol and give them a location of the breakdown so they can check it out.

I did plenty of hitchhiking as a teen. Mostly long distance, 1000 mile trips. Never locally as I had a car since age 16.
I did it for adventure. Never a problem. Mostly got picked up by 2 categories. Those wanting company to get high with while travelling, and those going long distance who needed help driving.
A couple of times I got picked up by older folks who wanted a strong guy along in case they broke down. One grandfather type offered to take me all the way from Florida to NY as he was travelling alone and was uneasy doing it.
And yes several times where I knew the driver was looking for a little nookie with me. I had the situation under control however, so not a problem. Not a one ever made a pass but I knew the score nonetheless.

No, the only person I ever gave a ride to was some drunk who put his car in the ditch during a snow storm. I saw him off the road, stopped to check to see if he was OK, smelled the alcohol on him and told him that if he did not want to go to jail he should get in my car and I'd drive him home.
He seemed like a nice guy, had a nice car in the ditch and the house I drove him to was pretty nice looking also.
But as far as picking up people who are just out there walking along the highway? Never, I have read too many stories about bad things happening to people.
